Do you have one or more missing teeth? Your dentist can fill (bridge) gaps using artificial tooth implants or false teeth, also known as dental... moreDentistry is a profession that has been around for hundreds of years. Since the early days of human existence, ailments of the teeth and their evidence has been uncovered by archaeologists. The earliest known history of dentistry can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where scientists have found that people were using various replacements for lost teeth.
The earliest known records of dentistry date back to 7500 BC. This branch of medicine has come a long way from the simplest methods, like pulling out teeth using rudimentary tools and fixing replacements made out of gold. Besides ancient Egypt, early records of practice in dental medicine have also been found in the Indus Valley Civilization.
Around the 13th century, the first professional dental specialists began to emerge. These practitioners were known as “barber-surgeons” because they would practice alarming methods for treating ailments like toothaches and loose teeth. These included the use of leeches, bleeding, or simply pulling out teeth using pliers.
The source of modern dental medicine can be traced back to a French national, Pierre Fauchard. He has since come to be known as the “Father of Modern Dentistry” due to his exceptional work in initiating many of the processes that comprise the basis of techniques that are widely used today. He started his career as a Navy surgeon and eventually became renowned as a professional dentist across France. He passed on his knowledge to the world through his book “The Surgeon Dentist.”
The first records of dentistry date back to the Middle Ages, describing very primitive methods of oral treatment. The most recent procedures and technology have made it possible to perform a wide variety of general and cosmetic dental procedures.
