What Is a Dental Bridge?

Do you have one or more missing teeth? Your dentist can fill (bridge) gaps using artificial tooth implants or false teeth, also known as dental bridges. A false tooth is held in place by an abutment tooth to fill the gap. A dental bridge can be made of metal, zirconia, alloys, porcelain, and even gold.

Who Needs a Dental Bridge?

If you have one or more missing teeth, a dental bridge can help you fill that gap and ensure efficient teeth functionality. Your teeth are designed to work together, so a missing tooth (space in between) can disrupt their movement, which can cause bite problems, chewing difficulties, pain, and even make you self-conscious about your smile. So, if you have lost a tooth because of an injury, gum disease, or tooth decay, a dental bridge can help you in restoring your smile.

4 Types of Dental Bridges

There are four types of dental bridges:

  1. Cantilever Bridge: Used for only one-sided missing tooth. The false tooth is anchored to the dental crown of the natural tooth.
  2. Traditional Fixed Bridge: Made of porcelain fused to metal or ceramics, this dental bridge has two or more crowns and filler teeth.
  3. Implant-Supported Bridge: Dental implants are used to support the bridge’s framework.
  4. Resin-Bonded Bridge: This dental bridge is used in case of missing front teeth. Instead of crowns, Maryland dental bridge is comprised of a metal or porcelain framework with wings.

How Long Can a Dental Bridge Last?

With proper care, a dental bridge can last 7 to 10 years and even longer. Follow these tips to keep your dental bridge in pristine condition:

  • Eat a healthy diet.
  • Brush your teeth twice a day.
  • Always use dental floss to clean under the bridge and between your teeth.
  • Visit your dentist regularly.
  • Use ADA-sealed oral care products.
