While dental implants can be a beacon of hope if you’re missing a tooth or two, the process can be a little nerve-wracking for some people. The recovery period following the surgery is especially crucial for dental implants. This is because it is necessary for the implant to fuse or osseointegrate with the bone surrounding it.

This osseointegration period can take up to 3 to 6 months. The timeframe may intimidate you, but it isn’t as bad as it sounds. Following a few simple tips can make the process successful and may even speed up your recovery.

  1. Salt Water Rinses: Following any oral surgery, it is recommended to rinse your mouth with saltwater. And it is the same for dental implants. In addition to being soothing, saltwater rinses reduce the harmful bacteria inside the mouth without irritating the incision. Just dissolve a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and swish the mixture in your mouth for 30 seconds, 3 to 4 times a day.
  2. Rest: This is especially important right after surgery but should ideally be followed for a few weeks. Resting allows your body to heal itself. And the best part is that you don’t need to put in any effort. Try to avoid strenuous activities for a while after the surgery, even after you start getting better. This is important as rigorous activities could put you at the risk of getting hit in the face.
  3. Rethink Your Diet: It is entirely okay only to have ice cream after the surgery, as long as you make sure you don’t go overboard. It is also necessary to avoid any spicy or hot foods, as they can increase the risk of bleeding or irritation at the surgical site. Afterward, it would help if you focused on including soft, nutritious foods that are easy to chew. Steamed vegetables, such as broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, green beans, etc., are some of the best things you can consume on the days following your surgery. The nutrients will help speed up your healing process, and the soft food would prevent the incision from hurting.
